A
New Map of Central America Shewing
the Different Lines of Atlantic & Pacific Communication.
John Disturnell, 1851. Full color lithograph, 22.5" x 31.5",
folds into 4" x 6" cloth covers. Front cover detached,
few folds lightly toned, few fold separations closed on verso
with some minute loss, otherwise quite clean and bright. Phillips(M)
p.215 notes only the 1850 edition. Not in Sabin. $350.00
Likely compiled following the 1850 Clayton-Bulwer
treaty whereby the United States and Great Britain relinquished
any independent rights to an inter-oceanic canal across Central
America. Four proposed routes are shown between the Isthmus of
Tehuantepec and Point Chirambira, Granada. The whole is brightly
colored in wash and outline including vertical sections along
each route and another section showing the depth of the River
Colorado at the San Juan junction. A 10" x 7" inset
Geological Map of the Panama Isthmus is fully colored by strata
according to a key. Additionally, a 13.5" x 7" inset
Map of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec after the original of Juan De
Garay" details this proposed route along with a vertical
section and small view. Mileage scales appear in British Statute
Miles, Miles and Spanish Leagues. A superb example of
Disturnell's fine and detailed work. |
