Yates, Emma Willard   Atlas to Accompany A System of Universal History.  NY, F.J. Huntington and Co., 1839.  4to, blue wraps, [16pp] comprised of 1 double page chart, 9 colored maps on 4 leaves and one double page colored modern map.  Spine showing wear, light soiling, one loose leaf, internally very clean.  Not in Phillips, LeGear, or Sabin.$400.00
An unusual edition of Emma Willard’s popular series of geographical works, here bearing the imprint of Emma Willard Yates, reflecting her short-lived marriage to Dr. Christopher Yates in 1838.  Being an unhappy marriage from the start, Willard left Yates late in 1838 (see DAB) suggesting that very few of her works bear the “Yates” imprint.  The atlas as well is unusual and quite striking with the maps being derived from Edward Quin’s earlier Historical Atlas.  Each map is presented as an historical view as if from the heavens, surrounded by heavily stippled “clouds”.  Willard likely had seen Quin’s work prior to publishing the first edition of this style in 1835.

Vuillemin, Alexandre Atlas Illustre’ De Geographie Commerciale et Industrielle Presentant Les Grandee Divisions Physiques, La Distribution Geographique…  Paris, Fatout, 1860.  Large folio (26” x 18”), ½ leather over marbled boards, [4] pp., 16 double page engraved and colored maps.  Recased with original spine and boards, some scuffing, edge wear, lower corner of front board well worn, map sheets clean and bright.  Not in Phillips.  $3,200.00
A very nice example of Vuillemin’s magnificent and extremely rare illustrated atlas.  Sixteen finely engraved and colored maps on bifolio sheets comprise the atlas, with each map containing engraved vignettes and accompanying descriptions representative of the people, customs, views and natural history of the region.  A staggering three hundred and thirty-five vignettes adorn the mere sixteen sheets, France of course the most highly decorated with eighty-four vignettes.  Although individual map sheets occasionally appear, complete examples of Vuillemin’s superlative work are rarely encountered.

Everts, L.H. Official State Atlas of Kansas Compiled from Government Surveys, County Records and Personal Investigations.  Phila, L.H. Everts & Co., 1887.  Folio, ¾ calf over cloth, gilt title, 340pp + 25 folding maps + 264 unnumbered pages lithograph views and county business directories, original sales receipt laid in.  Rebacked with original boards, title page and first few leaves a bit chipped, map 103 and facing view moderately browned, 3 maps with short closed tears, balance very clean and bright, very good or better overall.  $10,500.00

The most exhaustive and lavish American state, regional or county atlas produced during the 19th century and certainly a crowning achievement for the L.H. Everts company.  Everts atlas presents a remarkable cartographic and pictorial record of statewide development contemporary to the winter of 1886, completed only after constant updating and re-engraving.  The publisher remarks “...the perseverance and labor of a large corps of surveyors and mappers almost two years has been given to the preparation of this work”, this excluding the artists and agents dispatched to compile the pictorial views.  The atlas contains nearly nine hundred distinct maps, including twenty-five very large folding plans, all brightly colored by hand and arranged alphabetically by respective county.  This copy also contains an additional two hundred and sixty-four unnumbered pages of fine lithographic views and county business directories inserted and arranged by county.  Similar works by Andreas and Baskin, Forster & Company, magnificent in their own right, pale by comparison cartographically and pictorially.  Everts Official Atlas of Kansas is today an excessive rarity, with no copies crossing the auction block or known to have been offered for many years, and certainly a cornerstone of any American map collection.
