Detailed birds-eye view showing the fortified Barvarian city of Landau, situated northwest of Karlsruhe. Landau was ceded to the French in 1648 following the 30 years war. A clean crisp woodcut engraving with descriptive German text below. Initials of W.S. and the date 1547 appear on a stone in the foreground

Decorative sea chart of the Thames estuary oriented south with large title cartouche and surprising inland detail.

 

Plan de le Ville et Fanbourg De Paris Avec Tous ses Accroissemens.  Paris, Monharde et Jean, 1789. 12mo gilt embossed slipcase, uncolored engraving, 24.2" x 37.7", 24 segments on original linen. Light toning along folds, small ink spot, slipcase showing light wear, overall very good. $450.00
An excellent plan of the city with inset, extensive reference key and a striking cartouche. Quite finely engraved with open areas in stipple. Mounted on orange linen typical of official maps with the city divided into numbered sections in contemporary manuscript.

 

A New and Accurate Plan of London, Westminster and Borough of Southwark; wherein is distinctly inserted all the Additional Streets, Squares &c in and around the Metropolis And Extended to Chelsea, Walworth &c, &cLondon, Robert Sayer, 1792. 12mo marbled slipcase, colored engraving, 17.2" x 24.2", 16 segments on original linen. Lightly toned overall, light wear, case worn, overall very good. $225.00
Finely engraved plan after Harris with reference key at bottom. Uncommon to find this widely published map with the Sayer imprint.

Detailed map illustrating Napoleon’s campaigns and showing from the North and Baltic Seas to the Mediterranean.

 

Harbours and Islands in the English Channel.  Laurie & Whittle, 1815. Uncolored engraving, 37" x 24.2", separate issue on original linen. Nicely toned overall, very good or better. $325.00
Very finely engraved chart composed of four large and four small detail maps focusing on the southern portion of the Channel. The large charts include Falmouth Harbour, Plymouth Sound (with recognition view), Tor Bay and Dartmouth and the Channel Islands of Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney &c. showing also the coast of France. The small charts show St. Austle’s Bay, Fowey, Lyme-Regis to Beers Head and Birdporrt. Each detail is titled with coordinates, soundings and rhumb lines.

 

Fine Blachford Sea Chart

A New and Correct Chart of the North Sea on a Mercators Projection from the most recent Authorities.
London, Robert Blachford, 1829. Separate issue, 2 sheets joined, some color, 36.5" x 49", original linen backing, linen bound edges. Fine condition. Ref: Tooley (Dict) p.58.$350.00
Large superbly engraved merchant chart first issued by Blachford in 1809, oriented west with large elaborate title, inset plan of Amsterdam’s Grand Canal, rhumb lines and 11 recognition views. Latitude scales are provided for accurate plotting on this Mercator’s projection. Lighthouses are highlighted in color, a practice not applied to Admiralty charts until mid-century. Blachford was successor to J.H. Moore and later partnered with James Imray. Examples of his solo works are today seemingly quite scarce.

Attractive and detailed despite the small size. Derived from Arrowsmith. Short catalog list of Cruchley maps pasted to outer panel.

 

Neuste Eisenbahn-Karte von Central Europa.  Frankfurt, V. Hendschel, 1852. Lithograph, outline color, 28.5" x 33.5", 32 segments on linen, folds into 12mo pictorial boards. Light foxing, hinges splitting otherwise very good. $150.00
An obscure German rail map of Central Europe with good detail. Hendschel is not mentioned in Tooley’s Dictionary or Supplement and no examples of his work appear in Jolly/Rosenthal.

 

The Basin of the Pacific.  James Wyld, c.1852. Engraving, outline color, 22.5" x 33". Separately issued, dissected into 8 panels and laid on linen. Bright color, some light soiling, linen browned with some some loss along one fold, overall very good. $300.00
Shows the Pacific Basin from the Bay of Bengal to Kamtchatka and the Aleoutien Islands to Terre del Fuego. Continents and political divisions outlined in color with a wide blue wash along the coasts. A profusion of islands and coastal places are named. Interior detail is confined to Southeastern Australia where South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales are bordered and named, suggesting a publication date of 1852 or later. A nice Pacific map, typical of the concise, accurate charts published by Royal Geographer James Wyld. Not often seen.

Islands in the Pacific Ocean.  A.K. Johnston, 1854. Outline color engraving, 19.7" x 24", original linen backing, marbled self-covers, leather title label in gilt. Lightly browned at folds, otherwise near fine.  $175.00
Map no. 29 from Johnston’s National Atlas. As the title suggests, focuses primarily upon the Pacific Islands situated between 60 degrees south and 80 degrees north latitude. Australia, New Zealand and the surrounding islands are outlined in color. Inland detail is limited to the Rocky Mountains in North America and the ranges running south through Central and South America. Printed on a fine sheet of Whatman paper watermarked 1850. Keyboard style border.
